Starbase: SpaceX is hiring.
On Tuesday March 2nd, 2021, SpaceX billionaire Elon Musk revealed his intentions to build a city in south Texas. shown in a tweet below, Musk named the city Starbase.
Musk hasn’t made any press statement on his intentions regarding the matter but his one-liner tweets appear to mean serious business. Later on March 30th, He tweeted the following:
Musk intends to create a settlement on Mars using the Starship currently being developed at the Boca Chica SpaceX facility to launch humanity into the next frontier, Mars. Elon Musk believes Starbase is going to play an integral role in colonizing Mars successfully.
The SpaceX south Texas launch site also known as the Boca Chica launch site is a private production facility, test site and Spaceport constructed by SpaceX. The stated purpose is to provide SpaceX an exclusive launch site that would allow the company to accommodate its launch manifest and meet tight launch windows. Initially, the site Was intended to support launches for the Falcon 9 and Falcon heavy launch vehicles as well as a variety of suborbital launch vehicles. However in 2019 SpaceX announced a change of plans for the site stating that, the launch site would be used exclusively for spacex’s Next Generation launch vehicle the Starship.
Although the specifics of Elon Musk’s plans are rather unclear, the billionaire moved from his home residence in California to Boca Chica Texas late last year. Boca Chica is a small town along the gulf of mexico in Cameron County Texas on the US-Mexico Border. Given the fact of Space X’s choice of Boca Chica as its City location, there must be something strategic about the small village .
Apart from the fact that Boca Chica is the Starship’s rocket building and testing launch site, SpaceX chose the village due to location (Closer to equator than Kennedy Space Center, Most optimal for maximizing payload and capitalizing on space flight fuel costs) and not to mention the methane-rich oil wells surrounding the site.
One of SpaceX limited liability companies, Lone Star mineral development LLC, got an oil and gas lease for two of such previously inactive wells.
While Lonestar (SpaceX’s subsidiary) bought the lease for the oil wells from Sanchez Oil & Gas Corporation, another oil and gas company Dallas Petroleum Group claims the ownership of the wells and took Elon Musk’s Lonestar mineral development to court.
our best guess is that Starbase would be a megacity for the expansion of SpaceX operations; it will probably be private property for SpaceX employees, technicians and engineers.
Renaming a Municipality?
There are procedures and processes that anyone has to go through if they would like to build the city and have it renamed.
SpaceX would have to give the local residents to sign a petition. This position would be submitted to the County Judge who would then in turn, order an election on whether the municipality should be incorporated. A successful election for the city would give it the power to create its own laws and other ordinances. Theoretically, that would mean Starbase is a “go”.
When SpaceX first got to Boca Chica in 2014 there were only six permanent residents due to the fact that many left the community after it was seriously devastated by Hurricane Beulah 1967.
however as of June of 2020 there were 600 SpaceX workers there and as of March of 2021 SpaceX had about 1,800 resident workers in the area.
A statement from Eddie Trevino, Cameron County judge says: “If SpaceX and Elon Musk would like to pursue down this path, they must abide by all state incorporation statutes. Cameron County will process any inappropriate petitions in conformity with applicable law”
While SpaceX might struggle with local county and state regulations, the idea of a futuristic city is exactly what Elon Musk has been able to build his massive fortune on, The unwavering will and drive to solve complex planetary problems and push the human race into the future.
